What it is
This is an independent poem by Tikkana, who is best known for his share of the Mahabharata; it is another of his well-known works. Tikkana is said to have lived around the 13th century; exact years are not given here (subject to verification). Tradition says he dedicated this poem to Manumasiddhi, who ruled at Nellore (subject to verification).
Subject and form
It covers the story after Rama's coronation, including episodes such as the abandonment of Sita and the birth of Lava and Kusa. The word "nirvachana" is explained as meaning "without prose", which is why the whole poem is in verse. It does not use the mixture of prose and verse (the champu style) that is common in Telugu kavyas.
Place in Telugu literature
Tikkana's name brings the Mahabharata to most minds; what is distinctive here is that he composed this part of the Ramayana as an independent poem wholly in verse. Along with the Mahabharata, this poem is often referred to when discussing the poetry of Tikkana, the second of the Kavitrayam. It is an important work in the Telugu Ramayana tradition.
