బసవ పురాణం వీరశైవ సంప్రదాయంలో ప్రముఖుడైన బసవేశ్వరుని కథను, ఆయనకు సంబంధించిన భక్తుల కథలను ద్విపదలో చెప్పే గ్రంథం. దీనిని పాల్కురికి సోమనాథుడు సుమారు 13వ శతాబ్దంలో రచించాడని సంప్రదాయం.
Basava Puranam is a work in dwipada verse on the life of Basaveswara, a leading figure of the Virasaiva tradition, and on the devotees linked with him. It is credited to Palkuriki Somanatha, of around the 13th century.

Basava Puranam is a Telugu purana-style work of the Virasaiva devotional tradition. It is credited to Palkuriki Somanatha, who is placed around the 13th century; exact years are not given here (subject to verification). Scholars differ somewhat about his period (subject to verification).
విషయం, రూపం Subject and form
ఇందులో బసవేశ్వరుని కథ, ఆయనతో సంబంధం ఉన్న శివభక్తుల కథలు ఉన్నాయి. రచన ద్విపద ఛందస్సులో సాగుతుంది. ద్విపద అంటే రెండు పాదాల పద్యం; ఇది వాడుక భాషకు దగ్గరగా ఉండే దేశీ ఛందస్సు. కథలు ఆ సంప్రదాయపు భక్తులను కీర్తించే ధోరణిలో ఉంటాయి.
It tells the story of Basaveswara and of Shiva devotees connected with him. The work is in the dwipada metre, a two-line verse form that is a native Telugu metre close to ordinary speech. The tales are told in a manner that praises the devotees of that tradition.
తెలుగు సాహిత్యంలో స్థానం Place in Telugu literature
సంస్కృత పదాలు ఎక్కువగా లేని సామాన్యుల భాషను, దేశీ ఛందస్సులను వాడటం వల్ల బసవ పురాణం తెలుగు వాడుక భాషకు ముఖ్యమైన ఉదాహరణగా భావిస్తారు. తెలుగులో ద్విపద కావ్యాల అభివృద్ధిలో సోమనాథునికి ప్రముఖ స్థానం ఉందని తరచు చెబుతారు. వీరశైవ సాహిత్యంలో ఇది ప్రసిద్ధ గ్రంథం.
Because it uses the language of ordinary people and native metres instead of a style heavy with Sanskrit, Basava Puranam is regarded as an important example of Telugu as people spoke it. Somanatha is often said to hold a leading place in the development of the Telugu dwipada poem. Within Virasaiva literature it is a well-known work.
