Who they were

Best-known works
Annamayya's work is mainly sankirtanas: songs with a refrain and verses, made to be sung. They are usually described as two kinds, devotional-spiritual and love-themed (sringara). Tradition says he composed about thirty-two thousand of them (subject to verification); only a part survives today, and it is said to have been preserved on copper plates at Tirumala.
Place in Telugu literature
Annamayya is regarded as one of the foremost poets of the Telugu padam tradition, the sung song form, which is why he is called the "father of pada poetry". His language is often described as simple and close to everyday speech. His sankirtanas are still widely sung today in concerts, bhajans and temples.
