Best-known works
Tyagaraja's main works are kritis: songs set to raga and tala that express devotion to Lord Rama, most of them in Telugu. Five kritis in the so-called ghana ragas are famous as the Pancharatna kritis. He is also said to have written two musical plays in Telugu, Prahlada Bhakti Vijayam and Nauka Charitram.
Place in Telugu literature
Tyagaraja is a Telugu poet as well as a musician, and his kritis are important examples of Telugu song writing. That he lived in the Tamil country yet composed in Telugu is a notable point in the literary history of the period. At the annual aradhana festival at Tiruvaiyaru, musicians gather to sing his kritis together.
