Achulu and hallulu (vowels and consonants)
Achulu are the vowels, sounds that can be spoken on their own (a, aa, i ...); hallulu are the consonants, which are spoken with the help of a vowel (ka, kha, ga ...). The Telugu alphabet is built mainly from these two groups.
Definition
Achulu (vowels, svaras) are sounds that can be spoken without the help of other sounds, for example a, aa, i, ii, u, uu, ru, ruu, e, ee, ai, o, oo, au. They are short (hrasva, taking one unit of time: a, i, u, ru, e, o) or long (dirgha, taking longer: aa, ii, uu, ruu, ee, oo; many books also count ai and au as long, subject to verification). A feature of Telugu is that it has short e and o as well as long ee and oo.
Hallulu (consonants, vyanjanas) are sounds spoken with the help of a vowel, for example ka, kha, ga, gha, nga; cha, chha, ja, jha, nya; ta, tha, da, dha, na (retroflex); ta, tha, da, dha, na (dental); pa, pha, ba, bha, ma; and others such as ya, ra, la, va, sha, sa, ha, la (retroflex).
Consonants are grouped by place of articulation: kanthya (the ka-group, throat), talavya (the cha-group, palate), murdhanya (the ta-group, retroflex), dantya (the ta-group, teeth) and oshthya (the pa-group, lips). The unvoiced ka, cha, ta, ta, pa are called parushalu and, in the Telugu school-grammar scheme, ga, sa, da, da, va (the letters that replace them in the gasadadava sandhi) are called saralalu (subject to verification).
Where it is used
Learning the Telugu script begins with vowels and consonants. The rules of sandhi depend on the nature of vowels and consonants (for example parushalu turning into saralalu, or a vowel meeting a vowel). The difference between short and long also matters in prosody.
Notes
The count of vowels and consonants differs by book: some textbooks say sixteen vowels (counting the anusvara and visarga among them), others count the vocalic ru, ruu, lu, luu separately. Consonants are said to number around thirty-six, with a small difference depending on how they are counted (subject to verification). Some letters such as ru, ruu, lu, luu appear mainly in Sanskrit words and old writing; a few old letters such as the retroflex ra are rarely used today.
