సంధి

Sandhi (euphonic joining)

సంధి అంటే రెండు పదాలు లేదా పదం, ప్రత్యయం కలిసే చోట వర్ణాల మధ్య జరిగే మార్పు. ముందు పదం చివరి అచ్చు, తరువాతి పదం మొదటి అచ్చుతో కలిసి ఒకే రూపంగా మారడం దీనిలో ముఖ్యమైనది.

Sandhi is the change that happens at the point where two words, or a word and a suffix, meet. A common case is a final vowel and the next word's initial vowel merging into one form.

నిర్వచనం Definition

Sandhi is the change that takes place where two words, or a word and a suffix, meet. For example, when "atadu" (he) is added to "ramudu" the result is "ramudatadu": the final vowel of the first word drops, and the remaining consonant joins the next vowel.

Grammar books usually sort sandhis into two groups. Telugu sandhis occur between Telugu words (for example atva, utva, itva and gasadadavadesa sandhi); Sanskrit sandhis occur between Sanskrit words (for example savarnadirgha, guna, vriddhi and yanadesa sandhi).

A few more examples: rama + anna = ramanna (atva sandhi); vidya + arthi = vidyarthi (savarnadirgha sandhi); raja + indrudu = rajendrudu (guna sandhi).

ఉపయోగం Where it is used

Sandhi is central to reading Telugu verse, because in literary language words often run together and appear as a single word. This is why schools set exercises to split a joined word or to join two words. The rules are also needed for writing correctly.

గమనికలు Notes

Traditional grammar says that some Telugu sandhis are obligatory (nityam), some optional (vikalpam), and some frequent but not universal (bahulam).

The number, names and grouping of sandhis vary by book; only a textbook-level account is given here. Many of these sandhis are not followed in everyday spoken Telugu today.
