Atishayokti (hyperbole)

Atishayokti, hyperbole, is a figure of meaning in which something is described in exaggerated terms that go beyond the limits of what is possible in the ordinary world.
Definition
Atishayokti means an utterance carried to excess, a statement made larger than life. The poet describes a person, thing or quality as far beyond what is ordinarily possible. Saying that a slender waist is so thin that one cannot tell whether it exists, or that a tall building touches the sky, are typical illustrations.
Where it is used
Poets use atishayokti to praise beauty, strength, wealth, generosity and valour in grand terms; it is common in descriptions of heroes, kings and heroines. In everyday language, too, we use exaggeration without noticing it.
Notes
In literature atishayokti is not a mere falsehood; it is a poetic convention meant to express a feeling intensely. The kinds of atishayokti and their names differ between treatises and are not given here. The illustrations are general descriptions in words and are not taken from any work.
