Alankara (figures of speech)
In poetics, an alankara (literally 'ornament') is a device of sound or of meaning that adds beauty and force to expression. Treatments commonly group them as figures of sound (shabdalankara) and figures of meaning (arthalankara).
Definition
The everyday meaning of the word alankara is 'ornament'. Just as an ornament adds to a person's beauty, certain turns of expression used by a poet add beauty and force to what is said; these are called alankaras. If the effect lies in the sound of the words it is a shabdalankara (figure of sound); if it lies in the idea expressed it is an arthalankara (figure of meaning).
Where it is used
Telugu poets use alankaras widely, in epics and in verse generally, to describe things and express ideas attractively. The names and features of the figures are among the basic topics taught in the study of Telugu literature. Knowing them helps a reader notice the beauty of the way a poet says something. Alankaras also appear in everyday speech, proverbs and advertising.
Notes
The number, names, grouping and definitions of the alankaras differ somewhat between treatises and between scholars; the pages in this section give the form commonly found in textbooks. Whether alankara or rasa is the more important element of poetry is a discussion within the poetics tradition and is not taken up here. No lines from works are quoted as examples; illustrations are described in words only.
