Upama (simile)

Upama, the simile, is a figure of meaning in which one thing is compared with another on the basis of a quality they share, using a word of comparison such as 'like' (vale, laga, vanti).

Definition

A simile has four parts: the upameya (what is being compared), the upamana (what it is compared to), the samanadharma (the quality they share) and the upamavachaka (the word expressing the comparison). For example, saying that a face is beautiful like the moon is an upama: the face is the upameya, the moon the upamana, beauty the shared quality and 'like' the word of comparison.

Where it is used

Upama is the most common figure, in everyday speech as well as in Telugu poetry. Poets use it freely to describe qualities such as beauty, strength, courage and speed. When all four parts are stated it is commonly called purnopama, and when one or more is left unstated, luptopama.

Notes

In upama a word of comparison is present and the two things remain distinct; if the two are identified with each other, the figure is rupakam. The number and names of the kinds of upama vary between works, so only two kinds are mentioned here. The illustration above is a general description in words of the usual textbook kind and is not taken from any work.
