Utpreksha, poetic fancy, is a figure of meaning in which the poet imagines or surmises that the thing described (upameya) is the thing it resembles (upamana), expressing it as a possibility rather than a statement of fact.

Definition

In utpreksha the poet imagines that the upameya may be the upamana. It is therefore not a plain statement of fact but a surmise. Words such as 'as if', 'perhaps' or 'it seems' (annatlu, emo, kabolu) signal the imagining. For example, saying that the ripples on a lake look as if they were hands waving to call someone is a typical illustration of utpreksha.
