Shabdalankara and arthalankara

Alankaras are broadly divided into two classes: shabdalankaras, which depend on the sound and arrangement of words, and arthalankaras, which depend on the meaning expressed.

Definition

In a shabdalankara the beauty lies in the sound of the chosen words, so replacing a word with a synonym usually destroys the figure. In an arthalankara the beauty lies in the idea expressed, so the figure usually survives when a word is replaced by a synonym. This test is commonly given as an easy way to see the difference between the two classes.

Where it is used

Telugu textbooks commonly treat anuprasa and yamakam as figures of sound, and upama, rupakam, utpreksha, arthantaranyasa, atishayokti and drishtanta as figures of meaning. A single verse can contain both kinds together.

Notes

Treatises differ on where some figures belong; slesha, for example, is variously treated as a figure of sound, a figure of meaning, or as belonging to both. Some works also speak of a third class depending on both sound and meaning (ubhayalankara) (subject to verification). The count of figures in each class varies from one treatise to another.
