Slesha (pun, double meaning)

శ్లేష అంటే ఒకే పదం లేదా వాక్యం ఒకేసారి రెండు లేదా అంతకంటే ఎక్కువ అర్థాలను స్ఫురించేలా వాడే అలంకారం. శ్లేష అనే మాటకు కౌగిలింత, అంటిపెట్టుకోవడం అని అర్థం.

Slesha is the figure in which a single word or sentence is used so that it suggests two or more meanings at once; the word slesha itself means 'embrace' or 'clinging together'. It is the nearest Telugu counterpart of the pun.

నిర్వచనం Definition

శ్లేషలో ఒక పదం ఒకసారి మాత్రమే వాడినా, దానికి ఉన్న అనేక అర్థాల వల్ల వాక్యం ఒకేసారి రెండు విధాలుగా అన్వయమవుతుంది. అంటే ఒకే మాటలు రెండు వేరు వేరు విషయాలను చెబుతాయి. ఇందులో పదాల ఎంపిక, వాటి అర్థాల మధ్య పొంతన కవి నైపుణ్యాన్ని చూపుతాయి.

In slesha a word is used only once, yet because it has several meanings the sentence can be read in two ways at the same time. The same words thus speak of two different things. The choice of words and the way their meanings fit together show the poet's skill.

ఉపయోగం Where it is used

శ్లేష ద్వ్యర్థి, త్ర్యర్థి వంటి కావ్యాలలో ఎక్కువగా కనిపిస్తుందని చెబుతారు (సరిచూడాలి); ఒకే పద్యాన్ని రెండు కథలకు లేదా రెండు వర్ణనలకు అన్వయించగలిగే విధంగా కవులు దీనిని ఉపయోగించారు. తెలుగు భాషలో ఒకే పదానికి అనేక అర్థాలు ఉండడం శ్లేష సాధ్యమవడానికి కారణం. వాడుకలో చమత్కార సంభాషణలలో, చలోక్తులలో కూడా శ్లేష వాడతారు.

Slesha is said to appear especially in works of double or triple meaning, where one verse can be applied to two different stories or descriptions (subject to verification). It is possible because words in Telugu often have several meanings. It is also used in witty remarks and repartee in everyday speech.

శ్లేషను శబ్దాలంకారంగా చెప్పాలా, అర్థాలంకారంగా చెప్పాలా అనే విషయంలో గ్రంథాల మధ్య భేదాలు ఉన్నాయి. యమకంలో శబ్దం పునరావృతమై అర్థభేదం ఉంటుంది; శ్లేషలో ఒకే శబ్దం ఒక్కసారే వచ్చి అనేక అర్థాలు స్ఫురిస్తాయి. శ్లేష రకాలు, వాటి పేర్లు గ్రంథాలను బట్టి మారుతాయి కాబట్టి ఇక్కడ ఇవ్వలేదు. ఉదాహరణ పద్యాలు ఇవ్వలేదు.

Treatises differ on whether slesha should be counted as a figure of sound or a figure of meaning.
