Yamakam (repetition with different meanings)
Yamakam is a figure of sound in which the same group of syllables (a word or part of a word) recurs and carries a different meaning each time it occurs.
Definition
In yamakam the same group of sounds, in the same order, occurs two or more times in a verse, but with a different meaning each time. Anuprasa has only repetition of sound; what marks yamakam out is that the repeated sounds also differ in meaning.
Where it is used
Poets use yamakam to display skill with language and to make witty, pleasing word combinations. Because repeating sounds with different meanings needs a good command of the language, it is regarded as a figure that shows the poet's craft. Some treatises distinguish kinds of yamakam by where in the line the repetition falls, such as beginning, middle or end (subject to verification).
Notes
If a sound is repeated without any difference in meaning, the figure is anuprasa. If one word with several meanings is used once and suggests two meanings at the same time, that is slesha; in yamakam the sound itself recurs. No example verses are given here.
