Rupakam (metaphor)

Rupakam, the metaphor, is a figure of meaning in which the thing described (upameya) is spoken of as being identical with the thing it is likened to (upamana), without any word of comparison.

Definition

In rupakam the upameya and the upamana are spoken of as if there were no difference between them. A simile has a word of comparison such as 'like'; a metaphor has none. For example, saying not that a face is like the moon but that the face is the moon (the 'face-moon') is a rupakam.

Where it is used

Rupakam makes a description forceful and compact, and poets use it to describe nature, beauty, devotion, truths about life and much else. In Telugu a rupakam is easily formed by joining the two words into a compound, as in forms such as 'face-moon' or 'life-ship', which are heard in everyday language too.

Notes

Rupakam and upama are close; the usual distinction is that with a word of comparison it is upama and with identification it is rupakam. If the upameya is merely imagined to be the upamana (with words such as 'as if' or 'perhaps'), the figure is utpreksha. The names and number of the kinds of rupakam vary between works and are not given here. The illustrations are general descriptions in words only and are not taken from any work.
