Arthantaranyasa (supporting a statement by a general truth)

Arthantaranyasa is a figure of meaning in which a particular statement is supported by a general truth, or a general truth is supported by a particular instance.

Definition

The name can be understood as 'placing another meaning alongside'. The poet first states one thing and then states a related thing to support it. Sometimes a particular statement (a specific event) is supported by a general truth known to everyone; at other times a general truth is supported by a particular instance. For example, saying that even a capable person faltered at a task, and backing this with the general truth that even the great are sometimes mistaken, is a typical illustration.

Where it is used

Poets use this figure to follow a description with a moral or a worldly truth, so it is often found in Telugu didactic verse and in maxims. Giving a general justification for an event in a story lends weight to what is said.

Notes

This is not a comparison like upama; the main point is that one sentence supports another. Where two sentences are presented as reflecting each other, the figure is drishtanta. Treatises explain the difference between the two in different ways. The illustration is a general description in words only and is not taken from any work.
