గురువు – లఘువు

Guru and laghu (heavy and light syllables)

లఘువు అంటే ఒక మాత్ర కాలంలో పలికే హ్రస్వాక్షరం; గురువు అంటే రెండు మాత్రల కాలం పట్టే దీర్ఘాక్షరం లేదా సంయుక్తాక్షరం, సున్న, విసర్గల ముందున్న అక్షరం. తెలుగు పద్యంలోని ప్రతి అక్షరం ఈ రెండింటిలో ఒకటి; గణాలన్నీ వీటితోనే ఏర్పడతాయి.

A laghu is a light syllable taking one matra of time; a guru is a heavy syllable taking two, such as a long vowel or a short vowel followed by a conjunct consonant, anusvara or visarga. Every syllable of a Telugu verse is one or the other, and all ganas are built from them.

నిర్వచనం Definition

In Telugu prosody syllables are of two kinds: laghu (light) and guru (heavy). A laghu is counted as one matra of time and a guru as two.

Laghus: the short vowels a, i, u, ru, e and o, and consonants carrying them (ka, ki, ku, ke, ko). Telugu has short e and o, so those syllables are laghu, while the long e and o are guru.

Gurus: the long vowels (aa, ee, uu, long ru, long e, ai, long o, au) and consonants carrying them (kaa, kii, kee, kai, koo, kau and so on). In addition, a short syllable followed by a conjunct or doubled consonant becomes guru (the first syllable of "amma"), and so does a syllable carrying an anusvara (sunna) or visarga (the first syllable of "sampada").

Examples (words only): "kamala" is three laghus; "rama" is guru, laghu; "amma" is guru, laghu; "sampada" is guru, laghu, laghu.

ఉపయోగం Where it is used

Marking each syllable as guru or laghu is the first step in analysing a verse. The resulting sequence is then split into ganas to decide which metre the verse is in. When a verse is recited with a tune, the guru is held a little longer and the laghu is passed quickly, which is what produces the rhythm.

గమనికలు Notes

In prosody textbooks the laghu is commonly marked "I" and the guru "U" (subject to verification).

There are exceptions in special cases. For example, a laghu at the end of a line may traditionally be counted as guru, and details such as how a conjunct at the start of the next word affects a short syllable at the end of the previous word are given in prosody textbooks (subject to verification).
