Introduction to Telugu prosody (chandassu)
Chandassu is the science of metre: the rules that fix how syllables, ganas and lines are arranged in a verse. Guru and laghu, gana, yati and prasa are its main parts, and Telugu metres fall broadly into two families, vruttalu and jatulu.
Definition
Chandassu is the body of rules that gives poetry its rhythm and form. In the Sanskrit tradition chandas is one of the six Vedangas. In Telugu it chiefly describes the rules by which a verse (padyam) is composed and read.
Every syllable of a Telugu verse is either guru (heavy) or laghu (light). These are grouped into units called ganas. A verse is normally divided into lines (padas): most verses have four, a dwipada has two. In each line the arrangement of ganas, the yati and the prasa follow fixed rules.
On this basis Telugu metres are described broadly as two families: vruttalu and jatulu.
Where it is used
Metrical verse appears in Telugu kavyas, prabandhas, shatakas and verse plays. A poet needs chandassu to compose a verse, a reader to recite it with the right rhythm, and a student to analyse it.
This section has separate pages for the main parts of chandassu (guru and laghu, gana, yati, prasa), for the two families of metres, and for well-known individual metres.
Notes
Among the older works on Telugu prosody, Kavijanasrayam (known under the name of Malliya Rechana) and Appakaviyam (by Kakunuri Appakavi, around the 17th century) are well known (subject to verification). Treatises and schools can differ in how some rules are stated; this page gives the form commonly found in textbooks.
Modern free verse does not follow these rules.
