నిర్వచనం Definition

యతి అనే మాటకు విరామం అని అర్థం. ఛందస్సులో యతి అంటే పాదంలోని మొదటి అక్షరానికి, పాదంలో నిర్ణయించిన స్థానంలో ఉన్న అక్షరానికి మైత్రి (అంటే ఒకే అక్షరం, లేదా సంప్రదాయం అంగీకరించిన సమానమైన అక్షరం) ఉండాలనే నియమం. ఈ స్థానాన్ని యతి స్థానం అంటారు; పాదాన్ని చదివేటప్పుడు అక్కడ ఒక చిన్న విరామం ఉంటుందని సంప్రదాయ భావన.

The word yati means a pause. In prosody it is the rule that the first letter of a line must be matched, by the same letter or by a related letter accepted by tradition, at a place fixed for that metre in the same line. That place is the yati sthana, and by the traditional idea the reader rests briefly there.

The letters need not be identical: certain groups of vowels and of consonants count as equivalent (yatimaitri). The tables of these groups are given in prosody textbooks.

ఉపయోగం Where it is used

యతి స్థానం ఛందస్సును బట్టి మారుతుంది. ఉదాహరణకు ఉత్పలమాలలో పదవ అక్షరం, చంపకమాలలో పదకొండవ అక్షరం, శార్దూల విక్రీడితంలో పదమూడవ అక్షరం, మత్తేభ విక్రీడితంలో పద్నాలుగవ అక్షరం యతి స్థానాలు. ఆటవెలదిలో ప్రతి పాదంలో నాలుగవ గణం మొదటి అక్షరం యతి స్థానం. ఇతర ఛందస్సుల యతి స్థానాలను ఛందశ్శాస్త్ర పాఠ్యపుస్తకాలలో చూడవచ్చు.

The yati place depends on the metre. For example it is the 10th syllable in utpalamala, the 11th in champakamala, the 13th in sardulavikriditam and the 14th in mattebhavikriditam. In ataveladi it is the first letter of the fourth gana of each line. The yati places of other metres are given in prosody textbooks.

Yati and prasa are separate rules: yati concerns the first letter of a line, prasa the consonant of its second syllable. Some metres allow special concessions about yati (for example prasa-yati); their details are in prosody works (subject to verification).
