నిర్వచనం Definition

ఔచిత్యం అంటే తగినట్లు ఉండడం. కావ్యంలో పదం, అర్థం, రసం, పాత్ర స్వభావం, సందర్భం, వర్ణన వంటివి ఒకదానికొకటి తగి ఉండడమే ఔచిత్యం. ఉదాహరణకు, పాత్ర స్వభావానికి, సందర్భానికి తగిన మాటలనే కవి ఆ పాత్రతో పలికించాలి.

ఈ భావన క్షేమేంద్రునితో, ఆయన రచన ఔచిత్య విచార చర్చతో ముడిపడి ఉంది. ఔచిత్యం కావ్యానికి జీవం అని ఆయన అన్నాడని చెబుతారు.

Aucityam means being fitting. In a poem, the word, meaning, rasa, the nature of a character, the occasion and the description should suit one another; that is aucitya. For example, a poet should make a character say what suits that character's nature and the occasion.

The idea is associated with Kshemendra and his work Aucitya-vicara-charcha. He is said to have called aucitya the life of poetry.

ఉపయోగం Where it is used

ఒక కావ్యంలో వర్ణన, పాత్రల సంభాషణ, రసపోషణ ఎంతవరకు సముచితంగా ఉన్నాయో విమర్శించడానికి ఔచిత్యం అనే కొలమానం వాడతారు. 'ఔచిత్యం లేదు' అనే విమర్శ ఒక అంశం సందర్భానికి తగదని చెప్పడానికి సాహిత్య చర్చల్లో సాధారణంగా వినిపిస్తుంది.

Aucitya is used as a yardstick to judge how fitting the description, the conversation of characters and the development of rasa are in a poem. The remark that something lacks aucitya is a common way in literary discussion of saying that it does not suit the context.

క్షేమేంద్రుడు ఔచిత్యాన్ని అనేక రకాలుగా విభజించాడని, ఆ సంఖ్య సుమారు ఇరవై ఏడు అని చెబుతారు (సరిచూడాలి); ఇక్కడ వాటిని వివరించలేదు. ఆయన కాలం గురించి కూడా ఇక్కడ చెప్పలేదు. ఔచిత్యాన్ని కావ్యానికి ఆత్మగా చూడాలా, లేక ఇతర సిద్ధాంతాలను పూర్తి చేసే సూత్రంగా చూడాలా అనే విషయంలో అభిప్రాయభేదాలున్నాయి.

Kshemendra is said to have divided aucitya into many kinds, in number around twenty-seven (subject to verification); they are not set out here. His date is not stated here either. Opinions differ on whether aucitya should be seen as the soul of poetry or as a principle that completes the other theories.
