Dhvani (suggestion)

Dhvani is the meaning that a poem suggests beyond the plain sense of its words. The dhvani theory is associated with Anandavardhana and holds that dhvani is the soul of poetry.

Definition

Dhvani is the meaning that is understood by suggestion, beyond what the words say directly. Classical poetics speaks of three powers of a word: abhidha (the direct meaning), lakshana (a related meaning taken when the direct one does not fit), and vyanjana (the power of suggestion). Dhvani is the meaning that arises through vyanjana.

For example, if someone says "the sun has set" to a person who is waiting, it may merely give the time; depending on the context it may also suggest "it is time to leave".

The dhvani theory is associated with Anandavardhana and his work Dhvanyaloka. It holds that dhvani is the soul of poetry.

Where it is used

The idea of dhvani is used to discuss the hints behind the apparent meaning of a poem. In Telugu criticism too, expressions such as "it suggests" are often used when explaining a verse.

Notes

A division of dhvani into three kinds, vastu-dhvani (of a fact), alankara-dhvani (of a figure) and rasa-dhvani (of a rasa), is often taught; scholars divide it in more detail still. Scholars differ on the discussion and criticism of this theory and on its relation to other theories; only the widely taught points are given here. Details such as the dates of the theorists are not given.
