Vakrokti (oblique, artful expression)
Vakrokti is a poet's artful, out-of-the-ordinary way of saying something, as against plain statement. The vakrokti theory is associated with Kuntaka and holds that vakrokti is the life of poetry.
Definition
Vakrokti is "vakra ukti", a bent or oblique way of speaking: saying something in a more distinctive and witty manner than plain speech. The theory holds that this special quality of the poet's way of saying is what sets poetry apart from an ordinary sentence.
The theory is associated with Kuntaka and his work Vakroktijivita; his view is that vakrokti is the life of poetry. He is said to have shown this obliqueness at different levels, from the arrangement of sounds in a word up to the sentence, the episode and the whole work.
Where it is used
The idea is used to discuss the distinctiveness of how a poet says something, as opposed to plain speech. In analysing a poem, this theory puts the emphasis on how the poet says it rather than on what is said.
Notes
In some other traditions the word "vakrokti" also names one particular figure of speech (a witty deliberate taking of a remark in another sense); what is discussed here is only the broad idea in Kuntaka's theory. The details of the kinds of obliqueness and dates are not given.
