తత్సమ, తద్భవ, దేశ్య, గ్రామ్య పదాలు
Tatsama, tadbhava, desya and gramya words
తెలుగు పదాలను మూలాన్ని బట్టి తత్సమం (సంస్కృత పదం యథాతథంగా), తద్భవం (సంస్కృత, ప్రాకృత పదాల నుంచి మారిన రూపం), దేశ్యం (తెలుగు సొంత పదం), గ్రామ్యం (వ్యవహార రూపం) అని సంప్రదాయ వ్యాకరణం విభజిస్తుంది.
Traditional grammar sorts Telugu words by origin into tatsama (a Sanskrit word used as it is), tadbhava (a changed form of a Sanskrit or Prakrit word), desya (a native Telugu word) and gramya (a colloquial form).
నిర్వచనం Definition
Tatsama: a Sanskrit word (some also include Prakrit) used in Telugu in nearly the same form. For example vidya, kavi, dharmam.
Tadbhava: a Sanskrit or Prakrit word that has come into Telugu with changed sounds. For example, vidde from vidya and achcheruvu from ashcharyam are often cited.
Desya: a native Telugu word that did not come from Sanskrit or Prakrit. For example illu (house), kannu (eye), chettu (tree).
Gramya: a form found in ordinary everyday speech rather than in literary language; traditional grammar regards it as unfit for literary use.
ఉపయోగం Where it is used
This division is taught in school grammar to understand the origin of Telugu words and how they are used in verse. Some sandhi and compound rules depend on whether a word is of Sanskrit or Telugu origin. It also helps in seeing how tatsama, tadbhava and desya words mix in literary language.
గమనికలు Notes
This is a textbook-level account. The number and names of categories differ by book: some books treat words from other languages (anyadesya) separately. On gramya, opinions differ about what counts as gramya; modern linguistics does not look down on colloquial forms. Before saying which category a word belongs to beyond the examples given here, a dictionary should be consulted (subject to verification).
