నిర్వచనం Definition

A kriya is the word that tells of an action, an event or a state of being. The root part of a verb is called the dhatuvu (for example chaduvu); suffixes are added to it to give forms that show tense, person and number.

The usual divisions are:

Sakarmaka and akarmaka verbs: a verb that needs an object is sakarmaka (ramudu pustakam chadivadu, "Rama read a book"); one that does not is akarmaka (ramudu navvadu, "Rama laughed").

Samapaka and asamapaka verbs: a verb that closes the sentence is samapaka (chadivadu, "he read"); one that leaves the sentence open is asamapaka (chadivi, "having read"; chaduvutu, "while reading").

Tenses: bhuta, past (chadivadu); vartamana, present (chaduvutunnadu, "he is reading"); bhavishyat, future (chaduvutadu, "he will read").

Prerana-arthaka, the causative: a verb meaning to make someone do the action (chadivinchadu, "he made someone read / taught").

ఉపయోగం Where it is used

The verb is the core of a sentence; it says who did what. In Telugu the verb changes its form according to the subject (for example atadu vachchadu, "he came"; ame vachchindi, "she came"; varu vachcharu, "they came"). Schools set exercises on recognising the kinds of verbs. Verse uses non-final (asamapaka) verbs heavily, so spotting them helps in understanding a poem.

This is a textbook-level account. Listing three tenses is the traditional method; modern linguists describe Telugu verb tenses differently (for example as past and non-past), so treatments differ by book. Subtypes of non-final verbs, negative verbs and the classification of roots are not covered here.
