లింగం, వచనం

Lingam and vachanam (gender and number)

లింగం అంటే పదం పురుషుడినా, స్త్రీనా, ఈ రెండూ కాని దానినా సూచిస్తుందో తెలిపే భేదం; వచనం అంటే ఒకటా, ఎక్కువా అనే సంఖ్యా భేదం. తెలుగులో లింగాలు మూడు, వచనాలు రెండు.

Lingam (gender) tells whether a word refers to a male, a female, or neither; vachanam (number) tells whether it refers to one or to more than one. Telugu grammar speaks of three genders and two numbers.

నిర్వచనం Definition

Lingam (gender) is the class of a person or thing that a word refers to. Telugu grammar has three: pumlingam, masculine (for example ramudu); strilingam, feminine (for example sita); and napumsakalingam, neuter, for what is neither (for example pustakam, "book").

Vachanam (number) tells whether a word refers to one thing or to more than one. Telugu has two numbers: ekavachanam, singular (pustakam, ammayi), and bahuvachanam, plural (pustakalu, ammayilu). Unlike Sanskrit, Telugu has no dual number.

ఉపయోగం Where it is used

In Telugu, gender is mainly decided by meaning (whether the person is male or female), not by the form of the word. The verb changes with gender and number: atadu vachchadu ("he came"), ame vachchindi ("she came"), adi vachchindi ("it came"), varu vachcharu ("they came", people), avi vachchayi ("they came", things). So they must be known to make a subject and verb agree.

గమనికలు Notes

Traditional Telugu grammar also uses a division into mahat and amahat. Books describe its scope somewhat differently, so it is not set out here. The formation of singular and plural has many rules and exceptions; only a textbook-level account is given.
