సంఖ్యావాచకం అంటే సంఖ్యను తెలిపే పదం: ఒకటి, రెండు, మూడు, నాలుగు, పది వంటివి. వస్తువుల లెక్కను చెప్పడానికి వీటిని వాడతారు. వరుస క్రమాన్ని చెప్పే పదాలను (మొదటి, రెండవ, మూడవ) కూడా సంఖ్యకు సంబంధించిన పదాలుగా పాఠ్యపుస్తకాలు చర్చిస్తాయి.

A sankhya vachakam (numeral) is a word that tells a number: okati, rendu, moodu, naalugu, padi and so on. It is used to count things. Words that give an order in a sequence (modati, rendava, moodava) are also discussed along with numerals in textbooks.

Standing alone, a numeral acts as a noun: okati, rendu, moodu.

Before a noun it works like an adjective: oka pustakam ("one book"), rendu pustakaalu ("two books"), moodu chetlu ("three trees"). Note that okati becomes oka here.

Words of order: modati ("first"), rendava ("second"), moodava ("third").

The names of the subclasses of numerals, and the technical terms for ordinal numbers, differ by book, so they are not given here. Some books count numerals as adjectives and others treat them separately. Names of larger numbers and their variant forms (for example vanda and nooru) are in standard textbooks.
