ఒకే భాష మాట్లాడే వారిలో ప్రాంతాన్ని బట్టి లేదా సమూహాన్ని బట్టి కనిపించే రూప భేదాలను మాండలికాలు అంటారు. మాండలికం అనే పదం మండలం (ప్రాంతం) నుంచి వచ్చిందని సాధారణంగా చెబుతారు (సరిచూడాలి). మాండలికాల్లో కొన్ని పదాలు, ఉచ్చారణలు, క్రియా రూపాలు వేరుగా ఉంటాయి, కానీ మాట్లాడేవారు ఒకరినొకరు సాధారణంగా అర్థం చేసుకుంటారు.

The differences of form seen among speakers of one language, by region or by group, are called mandalikalu. The word "mandalikam" is generally said to come from mandalam (region) (subject to verification). In dialects some words, pronunciations and verb forms are different, but speakers generally understand one another.

తెలుగు మాండలికాలను పుస్తకాలు సాధారణంగా ప్రాంతాల వారీగా చెబుతాయి, ఉదాహరణకు తెలంగాణ, కోస్తా ఆంధ్ర, రాయలసీమ, ఉత్తరాంధ్ర ప్రాంతాల్లో మాట్లాడే రూపాలు (ప్రాంతాల విభజన, పేర్లు గ్రంథాన్ని బట్టి మారతాయి; సరిచూడాలి).

భేదాలు ప్రధానంగా మూడు చోట్ల కనిపిస్తాయని చెప్పవచ్చు: ఉచ్చారణలో, పదాల ఎంపికలో, కొన్ని క్రియా రూపాల్లో. ఒకే వస్తువును వేర్వేరు ప్రాంతాల్లో వేర్వేరు పదాలతో చెప్పడం ఇందుకు ఉదాహరణ.

మాండలికాలు ప్రాంతాన్ని బట్టే కాక, కులం, వృత్తి, వయసు వంటి సామాజిక సమూహాలను బట్టి కూడా ఉంటాయని భాషావేత్తలు చెబుతారు (సరిచూడాలి).

Books usually describe Telugu dialects by region, for example the forms spoken in Telangana, coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema and north Andhra (the division and names differ by book; subject to verification).

The differences may be said to appear mainly in three places: in pronunciation, in the choice of words, and in some verb forms. Using different words for the same thing in different regions is an example.

Linguists say that dialects follow social groups too, such as caste, occupation and age, and not only regions (subject to verification).

మాండలికాలు తక్కువ స్థాయి భాషలు కావు; ప్రతి మాండలికానికి దాని నియమాలు ఉంటాయి. సాహిత్యంలో కూడా మాండలిక పదాలను ఉద్దేశపూర్వకంగా వాడతారు. ఇక్కడ ఏ ప్రాంతానికి ఏ పదాలు చెందుతాయో ఇవ్వలేదు, అవి నిర్ధారించుకోవడానికి మాండలిక నిఘంటువులు చూడాలి.

Dialects are not lesser forms of the language; each has its own rules. Writers also use dialect words on purpose in literature. Which words belong to which region is not given here; dialect dictionaries should be consulted to confirm them.
