Ottulu (subjoined consonant forms, also called vattulu)

An ottu (also called vattu) is the smaller form of a consonant written below or beside another when two consonants come together with no vowel between them. Ottulu make conjunct and doubled letters.

Definition

When two consonants come one after the other with no vowel between them, the first stands without a vowel (pollu) and the second is written in a smaller form below the first. That smaller form is called an ottu (also vattu).

Notes

A letter with an ottu is called a conjunct (samyuktaksharam) when the consonants differ, or a doubled letter (dwitvaksharam) when the same consonant is doubled; each has its own page in this family. How to write each ottu, and the special shapes of some of them, are in textbooks and writing books.

The form is called both ottu and vattu; ottu is used here.
