నిర్వచనం Definition

ఒకే అర్థాన్ని ఇచ్చే వేరువేరు పదాలను పర్యాయ పదాలు అంటారు (ఇంగ్లీషులో synonyms). ఒక పదానికి ఇవి ప్రత్యామ్నాయ పదాలుగా నిలుస్తాయి. నిఘంటువుల్లో ఒక పదం కింద పర్యాయ పదాలను ఇవ్వడం సర్వసాధారణం.

Different words that give the same meaning are called paryaya padalu (synonyms). Each can stand in for another. Dictionaries commonly list synonyms under a headword.

సూర్యుడు: రవి, భానుడు, భాస్కరుడు.

చంద్రుడు: శశి, జాబిల్లి.

పాఠ్యపుస్తకాల్లో మరిన్ని వస్తువులకు (భూమి, నీరు, పర్వతం వంటివి) పర్యాయ పదాల జాబితాలు ఉంటాయి.

Suryudu (the sun): ravi, bhanudu, bhaskarudu.

Chandrudu (the moon): shashi, jabilli.

Standard textbooks give lists of synonyms for many more things (the earth, water, a mountain and so on).

పర్యాయ పదాల అర్థాలు పూర్తిగా ఒకటే కావడం అరుదు; సందర్భాన్ని బట్టి, కవిత్వం-వ్యవహారం భేదాన్ని బట్టి, కొన్నిటిని ఎంచుకోవడం మంచిదని భావిస్తారు. తెలుగు పర్యాయ పదాల్లో తత్సమాలు, అచ్చ తెలుగు పదాలు రెండూ కనిపిస్తాయి.

ఒకే అర్థాన్ని ఇచ్చే పదాలను పర్యాయ పదాలు అంటే, ఒకే పదానికి ఉండే అనేక అర్థాలను నానార్థాలు అంటారు; ఈ రెండు వేరువేరు విషయాలు.

Synonyms are seldom exactly identical in meaning; choosing among them depends on context and on whether the use is poetic or everyday. Telugu synonyms include both Sanskrit-derived (tatsama) and native words.

Paryaya padalu are many words for one meaning; nanartha padalu are the several meanings of one word. The two are different topics.
