నిర్వచనం Definition

వ్యుత్పత్తి అంటే ఒక పదం ఏర్పడిన తీరును వివరించడం. పదాన్ని భాగాలుగా విడదీసి, ఆ భాగాల అర్థాల నుంచి పదం అర్థం ఎలా వచ్చిందో చెప్పడాన్ని వ్యుత్పత్తి అంటారు. నిఘంటువుల్లో పదం పక్కన ఈ వివరణ ఇవ్వడం కనిపిస్తుంది.

Vyutpatti means explaining how a word is formed. Splitting a word into parts and showing how its meaning follows from the meanings of the parts is called vyutpatti. Dictionaries often give it beside the headword.

గుర్తించడం, ఉదాహరణలు Recognising it, examples

పంకజం: పంకమున (బురదలో) పుట్టినది, అంటే తామర.

జలజం: జలమున (నీటిలో) పుట్టినది, అంటే పద్మం.

ఇలా పదాన్ని విడదీసి 'ఏది ఏమి చేస్తుంది / ఎక్కడ పుడుతుంది' అనే రూపంలో అర్థాన్ని చెప్పడం సంస్కృత మూలమైన పదాల్లో ఎక్కువగా కనిపిస్తుంది.

Pankajam: that which is born in pankam (mud), i.e. the lotus.

Jalajam: that which is born in jalam (water), i.e. the lotus.

Explaining a word by splitting it in this way is seen mostly with words of Sanskrit origin.

గమనికలు Notes

వ్యుత్పత్తి ముఖ్యంగా తత్సమ పదాల అర్థాలను, పర్యాయ పదాలు ఎందుకు ఏర్పడ్డాయో అర్థం చేసుకోవడానికి ఉపయోగపడుతుంది. ప్రకృతి, ప్రత్యయాల విభజన దీనికి ఆధారం.

కొన్ని పదాల వ్యుత్పత్తి పండితుల్లో చర్చనీయాంశం; ముఖ్యంగా దేశ్య పదాల మూలం విషయంలో అభిప్రాయభేదాలు ఉంటాయి. అలాంటివి ఇక్కడ చర్చించలేదు.

Vyutpatti helps mainly in understanding the meanings of tatsama words, and why their synonyms came to be. The splitting into stem (prakriti) and suffix (pratyaya) is its basis.

The derivation of some words is debated among scholars, especially the origin of desya words. Such cases are not discussed here.
