నిర్వచనం Definition

ప్రత్యక్ష కథనం: ఒకరు చెప్పిన మాటలను ఉన్నదున్నట్లుగా, ఉద్ధరణ చిహ్నాల మధ్య చెప్పడం. పరోక్ష కథనం: ఆ మాటల అర్థాన్ని మాత్రమే, చెప్పేవారి సొంత మాటల్లో, ఉద్ధరణ చిహ్నాలు లేకుండా చెప్పడం.

Direct speech (pratyaksha kathanam): giving the words that someone said exactly as they were, between quotation marks. Indirect speech (paroksha kathanam): giving only the sense of those words, in the reporter's own words, without quotation marks.

ప్రత్యక్షం: రాము, "నేను వస్తాను" అని చెప్పాడు.

పరోక్షం: రాము తాను వస్తానని చెప్పాడు.

ప్రత్యక్షం: ఆమె, "నాకు ఆకలిగా ఉంది" అంది.

పరోక్షం: ఆమె తనకు ఆకలిగా ఉందని చెప్పింది.

మార్చేటప్పుడు గమనించవలసినవి: ఉద్ధరణ చిహ్నాలు తీసివేస్తాం; 'నేను, నాకు' వంటి సర్వనామాలు కర్తనే సూచించే 'తాను, తనకు' గా మారతాయి (ఆత్మార్థక సర్వనామం పేజీ చూడండి); మాటల చివర 'అని' చేరి క్రియతో కలిసిపోతుంది (వస్తాను + అని = వస్తానని).

Direct: ramu, "nenu vastanu" ani cheppadu. (Ramu said, "I will come.")

Indirect: ramu tanu vastanani cheppadu. (Ramu said that he would come.)

Direct: ame, "naku akaligaa undi" andi. (She said, "I am hungry.")

Indirect: ame tanaku akaligaa undani chepindi. (She said that she was hungry.)

Points to notice in the change: the quotation marks go; pronouns such as "nenu, naku" change to "tanu, tanaku", which point back to the subject (see the page on the reflexive pronoun); and "ani" is added to the end of the words and joins the verb (vastanu + ani = vastanani).
