నిర్వచనం Definition

వాక్యంలో పని చేసేవారిని కర్త అంటారు; ఆ పని దేనిపై జరుగుతుందో దాన్ని కర్మ అంటారు; జరిగే పనిని చెప్పే పదం క్రియ. తెలుగులో వాక్యం సాధారణంగా కర్త, కర్మ, క్రియ అనే క్రమంలో ఉంటుంది, క్రియ చివర వస్తుంది (ఈ చివరి క్రియను సమాపక క్రియ అంటారు).

The one who does the action in a sentence is the kartha (subject); what the action falls on is the karma (object); the word that tells the action is the kriya (verb). A Telugu sentence usually runs in the order kartha, karma, kriya, with the verb last (this final verb is the samapaka kriya).

గుర్తించడం, ఉదాహరణలు Recognising it, examples

ramudu pandu tinnadu. (Ramudu ate a fruit.)

Kartha: ramudu. Karma: pandu. Kriya: tinnadu.

How to recognise them: find the verb first (tinnadu). Ask "who ate?" for the kartha (ramudu) and "what did he eat?" for the karma (pandu).

Sentences with no object have only a kartha and a kriya: ramudu nidrapoyadu. (Verbs that take no object are called akarmaka kriyas.)

In English the order is subject, verb, object (Rama ate a fruit); in Telugu the verb goes to the end. Word order can be changed for emphasis, but the verb at the end is usual.

గమనికలు Notes

Some books also divide a sentence into two parts, uddeshyam (what is spoken about) and vidheyam (what is said about it) (subject to verification). A sentence may also contain adjectives, adverbs and case endings; only simple sentences are shown here. This is a textbook-level account.
