Pollulu (consonants without a vowel)

A pollu is a consonant sound with no vowel after it (k, ch, t, t, p). In Telugu script a small sign (the virama) is written above the letter to show that no vowel follows.

Definition

In Telugu script every consonant letter carries the vowel "a" (ka = k + a). When only the consonant sound remains, with no vowel, it is called a pollu (a bare consonant).

To show that there is no vowel, a small sign (the virama) is written above the consonant. For example k, ch, t, t, p, m, n.

Recognising it, examples

How to recognise it: when a consonant is followed at once by another consonant in a word, the first is a pollu.

amma: a + m + ma. The first "m" is a pollu.

bhakti: bha + k + ti. The "k" is a pollu.

padyam: pa + d + ya + m. The "d" is a pollu.

As the page on ottulu says, when two consonants join with no vowel between them, the first is a pollu and the second is written in its ottu form.

Notes

Telugu words usually end in a vowel; words ending in a pollu are mostly of Sanskrit origin (jagat, vidvan) or come from other languages (subject to verification). Books may use the word "pollu" over different ranges.

This is a textbook-level account; the shapes of the ottus and special cases are not described here.
