కృదంతాలు అంటే ధాతువుకు ప్రత్యయం చేరి ఏర్పడే రూపాలు; వీటిలో వాక్యాన్ని ముగించని క్రియా రూపాలు (అసమాపక క్రియలు) ముఖ్యమైనవి. సాధారణంగా పాఠశాల వ్యాకరణంలో వీటిని ఈ పేర్లతో చెబుతారు, అర్థాన్ని బట్టి:

క్త్వార్థకం: ఒక పని ముగిసి మరొకటి జరిగిందని చెప్పే రూపం (చదివి).

శత్రర్థకం: ఒక పని జరుగుతూ ఉండగానే మరొకటి జరిగిందని చెప్పే రూపం (చదువుతూ).

తుమున్నర్థకం: ప్రయోజనాన్ని, అంటే 'చేయడానికి' అనే భావాన్ని చెప్పే రూపం (చదవడానికి).

Kridantalu are forms made by adding an ending to a root; among them the verb forms that do not close a sentence (asamapaka kriyas) are the main ones. School grammar usually names them as follows, by meaning:

Ktvartham: a form saying that one action was done and then another happened (chadivi, "having read").

Shatrartham: a form saying that one action goes on while another happens (chaduvutu, "while reading").

Tumuntam: a form of purpose, "in order to do" (chadavadaniki, "in order to read").

Chedartham: a form of condition, "if" (chadivite, "if one reads").

Some books name further forms beyond those above, and some include adjective-like forms such as "chadivina" in the same group (subject to verification).
