నిర్వచనం Definition

ఒక పదానికి వ్యతిరేకమైన అర్థాన్ని ఇచ్చే పదాన్ని వ్యతిరేక పదం అంటారు (ఇంగ్లీషులో antonym). వ్యతిరేకార్థక పదాలు, విరుద్ధార్థక పదాలు అనే పేర్లు కూడా కనిపిస్తాయి (సరిచూడాలి).

A word that gives the opposite meaning to another is called a vyatireka padam (in English, an antonym). The names vyatirekarthaka padalu and viruddharthaka padalu are also met with (subject to verification).

పగలు – రాత్రి

చిన్న – పెద్ద

గుర్తించే పద్ధతి: ఒక పదం యొక్క అర్థం చెప్పేటప్పుడు 'దానికి వ్యతిరేకార్థం ఏది?' అని అడిగితే వచ్చే పదం వ్యతిరేక పదం. నఞ్ తత్పురుషం వంటి సమాసాల్లో కూడా వ్యతిరేకార్థం వస్తుంది (సత్యం – అసత్యం).

velugu - chikati (light - dark)

sukham - duhkham (happiness - sorrow)

lopala - bayata (inside - outside)

chinna - pedda (small - big)

How to recognise it: ask "what is the opposite of this word?"; the answer is the vyatireka padam. Opposite sense also arises in compounds such as the nan tatpurusha (satyam - asatyam).

గమనికలు Notes

అన్ని పదాలకూ ఖచ్చితమైన వ్యతిరేక పదం ఉండదు. కొన్నిటికి సందర్భాన్ని బట్టి ఒకటి కంటే ఎక్కువ వ్యతిరేక పదాలు ఉండవచ్చు; ఉదాహరణకు 'చిన్న' కు 'పెద్ద' అనేది సర్వసాధారణం. వ్యతిరేక పదాలు రెండు పదాల మధ్య సంబంధం, పర్యాయ పదాలు ఒకే అర్థానికి అనేక పదాల సంబంధం; ఈ రెండు వేరువేరు విషయాలు.

Not every word has an exact opposite. Some have more than one opposite depending on context; for "chinna" the usual one is "pedda". Antonyms are a relation between two words, synonyms the relation of many words to one meaning; the two are different topics.
