నిర్వచనం Definition
In a nan tatpurusha the first member is a negating prefix such as a- or an-, giving the sense "not". The last member is the main one, and the compound names something opposite to it.
For example, asatyam = satyam kanidi, "that which is not truth".
"Nan" is the traditional name, in Sanskrit grammar, of the particle of negation, and Telugu grammar books use the same name.
గుర్తించడం, ఉదాహరణలు Recognising it, examples
How to recognise it: if the first part of the compound is a- or an-, and the analysing phrase comes out as "... kanidi / kanivadu" (that which is not ...), it is a nan tatpurusha.
asatyam = satyam kanidi, "not truth".
adharmam = dharmam kanidi, "that which is not dharma".
asadhyam = sadhyam kanidi, "that which is not possible".
A word that begins with a- is not a nan tatpurusha if that a- does not carry the sense of negation (for example when it is simply part of the word).
గమనికలు Notes
Some books treat the nan tatpurusha as a subkind within tatpurusha, others name it separately (subject to verification). Books also note that "an-" is used instead of "a-" when the next word begins with a vowel (for example anartham); this applies to Sanskrit-origin words.
