తత్పురుష సమాసం
Tatpurusha samasam (dependent compound)
తత్పురుష సమాసం అంటే ఉత్తరపదం ప్రధానంగా ఉండి, పూర్వపదంతో దానికి ఏదో ఒక విభక్తి సంబంధం ఉండే సమాసం. విగ్రహవాక్యంలో లోపించిన విభక్తిని బట్టి దీనిని ద్వితీయా, తృతీయా తత్పురుషం వంటి ఉపరకాలుగా చెబుతారు.
A tatpurusha compound is one whose last member is the main one and whose first member is tied to it by a case relation. In most grammar books it is divided into subkinds named after the case that is dropped, such as dvitiya or tritiya tatpurusha.
నిర్వచనం Definition
In a tatpurusha compound the last member (uttarapadam) is the main one in meaning. The first member (purvapadam) is tied to it by some case relation, and the case ending itself does not appear in the compound. When we write the vigrahavakyam (the analysing phrase), we put the case back.
For example, in rajabhatudu the main person is the soldier (bhatudu); the king (raju) is the one he belongs to. Vigrahavakyam: raju yokka bhatudu, "the king's soldier".
Traditionally tatpurusha is divided into subkinds named after the case that is missing in the first member. The nan tatpurusha, which carries a negative meaning, is also counted under it.
గుర్తించడం, ఉదాహరణలు Recognising it, examples
How to recognise it: open the compound up. If the sentence comes out right once a case meaning such as "nu", "cheta", "kosam", "valana", "yokka" or "lo" is put between the two words, and the last word is the main one, it is a tatpurusha.
enugukommu = enugu yokka kommu, "the tusk of an elephant". The tusk is the main thing; the elephant is what it belongs to.
vanavasam = vanamunandu vasam, "living in a forest". The living is the main thing; the forest is where it happens.
rajaputrudu = raju yokka putrudu, "the king's son".
Look at which case is missing and name the subkind after it (dvitiya tatpurusha, tritiya tatpurusha and so on). Each subkind has its own page in this family.
గమనికలు Notes
The number of subkinds under tatpurusha, their names, and which subkind a particular compound belongs to differ by book. Some books also give a prathama tatpurusha, and others treat dvigu as a branch of tatpurusha (subject to verification).
Since one compound can often be opened up in more than one way, it is best to follow the analysing phrase that your textbook gives when naming the subkind. Standard grammar textbooks list examples for every subkind.
