Amredita sandhi (sandhi in repeated words)

Amredita sandhi is the sandhi that takes place when a word is said twice (reduplication): the vowels where the two copies meet join, as in are + are = arere.

Definition

Amredita sandhi is one of the Telugu sandhis. "Amredita" means the repeating of a word, that is, the second utterance of the word in a reduplication. It is seen most often when an interjection expressing surprise, sorrow or joy is said twice.

Rule and examples

The rule, in textbook form: when a word is said twice, sandhi takes place if the initial vowel of the second (amredita) word follows the final vowel of the first. Which vowel remains depends on the example (subject to verification).

Examples:

are + are = arere

aha + aha = ahaha
