Anuswaram and visargam (the nasal dot and the visarga)
The anuswaram (sunna, written as a dot) is a nasal sound after a vowel. The visargam (written as two dots) is a light breath sound after a vowel. Both are signs that occur only together with a vowel.
Definition
The anuswaram (shown as a dot) is also called sunna. It marks a nasal sound after a vowel.
The visargam (shown as two dots) marks a light breath sound, like a faint ha, after a vowel.
Recognising it, examples
Words with the anuswaram: angam, kandam, sandhi, pustakam.
Words with the visargam: duhkham, antahpuram.
The sound of the anuswaram is close to the nasal of the group of the consonant that follows it (like nga in angam, like na in kandam, like ma in sampada). At the end of a word (pustakam) it sounds like a final m.
Notes
The visarga appears mostly in words of Sanskrit origin; in modern spoken Telugu its sound has weakened, and some words are also written without it.
Older writing has a sign called arasunna (a half-sunna), now rarely used. Whether books count the anuswaram and visargam among the vowels or as a separate class differs by book (subject to verification).
