Vargaksharalu (the five consonant groups)
Vargaksharalu are the five groups of five consonants each, from ka to ma: the ka-group, cha-group, ta-group (retroflex), ta-group (dental) and pa-group. Each group is named after its first letter.
Definition
The twenty-five consonants from ka to ma are divided, by place of articulation, into five groups of five letters each. These are called vargaksharalu (the group consonants).

Notes
Consonants such as ya, ra, la, va, sha, sa, ha and the retroflex la do not belong to the five groups; books treat them separately, and the names differ by book.
Textbooks of Telugu grammar call ka, cha, ta, ta, pa the parushalu and ga, sa, da, da, va the saralalu, and sandhi rules use these names (subject to verification). For the places of articulation of the five groups, see the page "Uccharana sthanalu".
