Hrasva, deergha and pluta (short, long and extra-long vowels)

Hrasva is a short vowel, deergha a long vowel, and pluta an extra-long vowel drawn out further. Traditionally a short vowel is said to take one matra of time, a long one two, and an extra-long one three.

Definition

Vowels are divided into three kinds by the time taken in saying them. Short vowels are spoken in the least time, long vowels take longer, and the pluta is drawn out the most. The unit used to measure this time is the matra.

Recognising it, examples

Short (hrasva): a, i, u, ru, e, o.

Long (deergha): aa, ii, uu, ruu, ee, oo. Many books also place ai and au among the long vowels (subject to verification).

Pluta: drawing out a vowel for three matras, as when calling to someone far away or in chanting and singing. Ordinary writing has no separate letter for it.

Notes

Telugu has short e and o as well; ee and oo are their long forms. The difference between short and long can change the meaning of a word (for example kala and kaala).

In prosody the difference matters: to decide laghu or guru one looks at whether the vowel is short or long; see the page "Guru and laghu". Most textbooks give the pluta only briefly.
