నిర్వచనం Definition

ఊష్మాలు అంటే శ, ష, స, హ అనే హల్లులు. వర్గాక్షరాల (క నుంచి మ వరకు) లో ఇవి చేరవు. వీటిని పలికేటప్పుడు గాలి ఆగకుండా ఊదినట్టు వెలువడుతుంది కాబట్టి ఈ పేరు; సంస్కృతంలో 'ఊష్మ' అంటే వేడి, ఆవిరి అని అర్థం.

సంప్రదాయ వ్యాకరణం వీటి ఉచ్చారణ స్థానాలను ఇలా చెబుతుంది: శ - తాలువు, ష - మూర్ధం, స - దంతాలు, హ - కంఠం (సరిచూడాలి).

Ooshmalu are the consonants sha (palatal), sha (retroflex), sa and ha. They are not among the group consonants (ka to ma). They are so named because the breath flows on as if blown while they are spoken; in Sanskrit "ushma" means heat or steam.

Traditional grammar gives their places of articulation as: palatal sha - palate, retroflex sha - roof of the mouth, sa - teeth, ha - throat (subject to verification).

వర్గాక్షరాల్లో గాలి నోటిలో ఏదో ఒక చోట ఆగి విడుదలవుతుంది; ఊష్మాల్లో అలా ఆగదు, ప్రవహిస్తూనే ఉంటుంది.

sha (retroflex): visham.

sa: samudram.

ha: hamsa.

In the group consonants the breath is stopped at some point in the mouth and then released; in the ooshmalu it is not stopped but keeps flowing.
