శకటరేఫ (ఱ)

నిర్వచనం Definition

ఱ అనేది తెలుగు వర్ణమాలలో ర కు భిన్నమైన హల్లు. దీన్ని శకటరేఫ అని, బండి ర అని అంటారు (శకటం అంటే బండి). పాత కాలంలో ర కంటే గట్టిగా పలికే ధ్వనిని ఇది సూచించేదని చెబుతారు (సరిచూడాలి).

The letter rra is a consonant of the Telugu alphabet different from ra. It is called shakata repha or bandi ra (shakatam means a cart). It is said to have stood for a harder, stronger sound than ra in earlier times (subject to verification).

పాత రచనల్లో ఇలా కనిపిస్తుంది:

మఱి (నేడు: మరి)

కఱ్ఱ (నేడు: కర్ర)

ఏఱు (నేడు: ఏరు)

ఈ రూపాలు ప్రాచీన కావ్యాల్లో, పాత ముద్రణల్లో కనిపిస్తాయి. నేటి వచనంలో ఎక్కువ మంది ఈ పదాలను ర తో రాస్తారు.

In old writing it appears like this:

mari (today: mari with ra)

karra (today: karra with ra)

eru (today: eru with ra)

These forms appear in the old kavyas and old printed books. In present-day prose most people write these words with ra.

ఱ నేటి ప్రామాణిక ఉచ్చారణలో ర కంటే భిన్నంగా వినిపించదని, అందువల్ల వ్యావహారిక వచనంలో దాని వాడకం తగ్గిందని చెబుతారు (సరిచూడాలి). కొన్ని పాఠ్యపుస్తకాలు వర్ణమాల జాబితాలో దీన్ని ఇంకా చూపిస్తాయి. పాత గ్రంథాల పాఠాన్ని చదివేటప్పుడు ఈ అక్షరం తెలియాలి.

It is said that in present standard pronunciation the sound of rra is not different from ra, so its use has dwindled in everyday prose (subject to verification). Some textbooks still show it in the list of letters. The letter has to be known to read the text of old works.
