నిర్వచనం Definition
The sampradana karakam is the role of the one to whom something is given in the action. In a wider sense, the one for whose benefit, or for what purpose, the action is done is also placed under it. It is the fourth of the six karakas.
In Telugu the recipient is usually in the fourth case, chaturthi vibhakti.
గుర్తించడం, ఉదాహరణలు Recognising it, examples
Before the verb, ask "to whom?". The answer is the recipient.
atadu pillalaku pandlu ichchadu. (To whom did he give? To the children.)
ame chaduvu koraku vachchindi. (For what did she come? For study.)
With verbs such as giving and telling, the one who receives comes as the sampradana.
గమనికలు Notes
Strictly speaking the sampradana is the one to whom something is given; books differ on whether a sense of purpose, as in "chaduvu koraku", or a destination, as in "uriki", should also be called sampradana (subject to verification). The ending "ku" also appears as a genitive ending; which case it is decided from the meaning of the sentence (see the page on chaturthi vibhakti).
This is a textbook-level account; the count and definitions of the karakas differ by book.
