షష్ఠీ విభక్తి

Shashthi vibhakti (genitive case)

షష్ఠీ విభక్తి అంటే ఒక నామవాచకానికి మరొక దానితో ఉన్న సంబంధాన్ని, ముఖ్యంగా స్వాధీనాన్ని లేదా చెందడాన్ని చెప్పే రూపం. సంప్రదాయంగా దీనికి యొక్క వంటి ప్రత్యయాన్ని చెబుతారు.

Shashthi vibhakti (the sixth case, genitive) is the form that expresses the relation of one noun to another, above all possession or belonging. Traditionally the word yokka is given as its ending.

నిర్వచనం Definition

Shashthi vibhakti is the form that expresses the relation of one noun to another: whose it is, what it belongs to, whose relative one is. It is also called sambandham (relation). The other cases relate a noun to the verb; this one relates two nouns to each other.

గుర్తించడం, ఉదాహరణలు Recognising it, examples

Ask "whose?" or "of what?".

idi ramuni pustakam. (Whose book? Ramu's.)

inti yajamani vachchadu. (The owner of what? Of the house.)

talli yokka prema goppadi. (Whose love? The mother's.)

Traditional books give "yokka" as the genitive ending; some also show forms like "ku" and "kin", and words like "lo" and "lopala", under this case (subject to verification). In modern Telugu the sense is most often carried by a change in the final sound of the noun (ramuni, inti).

గమనికలు Notes

This is a textbook-level account. Tradition says shashthi is not a karaka, since it relates two nouns rather than a noun and a verb. Books do not agree on under which case forms like "ku" and "lo" belong. The saptami page uses "lo" as an example.
