బహువ్రీహి సమాసం

Bahuvrihi samasam (attributive compound)

బహువ్రీహి సమాసం అంటే సమస్త పదం తన రెండు భాగాల అర్థాన్ని కాకుండా, వాటితో సంబంధం ఉన్న మరొక వ్యక్తిని లేదా వస్తువును సూచించే సమాసం. విగ్రహవాక్యం సాధారణంగా "కలవాడు", "కలది" వంటి మాటలతో ముగుస్తుంది.

A bahuvrihi compound is one whose meaning lies outside its two parts: it points to some other person or thing that has a link with them. The analysing phrase usually ends in words like "kalavadu" (one who has).

నిర్వచనం Definition

In a bahuvrihi compound neither the first nor the last member is the main one; the whole word points to a third thing that is linked to them. For this reason it is also called a compound whose main sense lies in another word.

For example, chakrapani = chakramu paniyandu (in the hand) kalavadu, "one who has a discus in the hand". The word names neither the discus nor the hand; it names the person who holds the discus (Vishnu).

గుర్తించడం, ఉదాహరణలు Recognising it, examples

How to recognise it: see what the compound points to. If it is not one of its two parts but a person or thing linked to them, it is a bahuvrihi. The analysing phrase ends in "... kalavadu / kaladi / kalavaru" (one who has ...).

padmanabhudu = padmamu nabhiyandu kalavadu, "one with a lotus in the navel".

nilakanthudu = nallani kanthamu kalavadu, "one with a dark throat".

dirghabahudu = podavaina bahuvulu kalavadu, "one with long arms".

In a karmadharaya the two words "nallani kantham" together name the throat itself; in a bahuvrihi, nilakanthudu names the one who has that throat. That is the difference.

గమనికలు Notes

Some books name subkinds of bahuvrihi (such as samanadhikarana and vyadhikarana bahuvrihi); the names and the division differ by book (subject to verification). They are not explained on this page.

Many fixed names (of gods and persons) are bahuvrihi compounds. When naming the kind of a particular name, follow the analysing phrase given in your textbook.
