Sandhi and samasam compared
Sandhi is the sound change where words meet; a samasam is a single word made from words that stand in a meaning relation. One word can be both a sandhi and a samasam (ramalayam).
Definition
Sandhi works at the level of sounds: the form changes where the last sound of one word meets the first sound of the next. A samasam works at the level of words: two or more words become one word, with a meaning relation between them; the case ending or the words that state this relation drop out of the compound.

The differences:
1. In a sandhi the change is in the sounds; in a samasam it is in the meaning relation between the words.
2. A sandhi is split (purvapadam + parapadam); a samasam is opened up with a vigrahavakyam.
3. The names of sandhis say how a sound changed (guna sandhi, itva sandhi); the names of samasas say what the meaning relation is (tatpurusha, dvandva).
Examples:
emantivi = emi + antivi: a sandhi only. It is not a samasam, because the two words do not stand in a compound relation.
rajabhatudu = raju yokka bhatudu: a samasam only (tatpurusha). No sandhi change in the sounds is seen here.
ramalayam: split as rama + alayam it is a sandhi (savarnadirgha sandhi); opened up as ramuni alayam it is a samasam (shashthi tatpurusha). Both are present in one word.
Notes
In school exercises one word may be asked about twice, once as "split the sandhi" and once as "name the samasa", so both analyses should be known. A sandhi can also take place inside a compound; some books give this a separate name (subject to verification). Names and divisions differ by book.
