సవర్ణదీర్ఘసంధి

Savarnadirgha sandhi (long vowel from like vowels)

సవర్ణదీర్ఘసంధి అంటే సమాన వర్గానికి చెందిన (సవర్ణ) అచ్చులు కలిసినప్పుడు వాటికి బదులుగా ఒకే దీర్ఘాచ్చు రావడం. ఇది సంస్కృత సంధుల్లో ఒకటి: విద్య + అర్థి = విద్యార్థి.

Savarnadirgha sandhi: when vowels of the same class (savarna) meet, a single long vowel takes their place. It is one of the Sanskrit sandhis: vidya + arthi = vidyarthi.

నిర్వచనం Definition

Savarnadirgha sandhi is one of the Sanskrit sandhis, and appears in Telugu between Sanskrit words. "Savarna" means a vowel of the same kind (the same place of articulation): a and aa form one pair, i and ii another, u and uu another. When the final vowel of the first word and the initial vowel of the second belong to the same pair, the two merge into the long vowel of that pair.

నియమం, ఉదాహరణలు Rule and examples

The rule, in textbook form: when a vowel of the same pair follows a, i or u (short or long), the two merge into the long vowel: a/aa + a/aa = aa; i/ii + i/ii = ii; u/uu + u/uu = uu.

Examples:

vidya + arthi = vidyarthi

kavi + indrudu = kavindrudu

bhanu + udayam = bhanudayam

maha + atma = mahatma

గమనికలు Notes

Sanskrit grammar also has rules for the vowels ri and li; only the a, i and u pairs, which are the most common in Telugu, are given here.

When Sanskrit words are used in Telugu they are usually already in the joined form (vidyarthi, mahatma and the like). The name and the wording of the rule may vary slightly from book to book.
