Guna sandhi (e, o, ar from a + i, u, ri)

Guna sandhi: when a or aa is followed by i/ii, u/uu or ri, the two merge into e, o and ar respectively. It is one of the Sanskrit sandhis: raja + indrudu = rajendrudu.

Definition

Guna sandhi is one of the Sanskrit sandhis. When the first word ends in a or aa and the second begins with i/ii, u/uu or ri, the two vowels merge into a single "guna" vowel. In Sanskrit grammar e, o and ar are called the guna vowels.

Notes

The e and o here are long vowels; in Sanskrit they are always long, and Telugu writes them so.

The name and the wording of the rule may vary slightly by book. Sanskrit grammar also has exceptions where this sandhi does not occur; they are not included here.
