Itva sandhi (i-sandhi)
Itva sandhi occurs when a word ending in the vowel i (such as emi or adi) is followed by a vowel. The final i drops and the following vowel joins the preceding consonant: emi + antivi = emantivi.
Definition
Itva sandhi is one of the Telugu sandhis. "Itvam" means the vowel i. When the first word ends in i and the second begins with a vowel, the final i of the first word drops, and the initial vowel of the second word joins the consonant that stood before that i.
Rule and examples
The rule, in textbook form: when a vowel follows the final i of words such as emi, sandhi takes place optionally, that is, it may or may not happen (subject to verification).
Examples:
emi + antivi = emantivi
emi + annavu = emannavu
adi + emi = ademi
Notes
When sandhi does not take place, forms such as "emi + antivi = emiyantivi" result, where a "ya" is inserted (yadagama sandhi).
Books may give a different rule for the final i of verb forms; that detail is not included here, so see the textbooks.
