Utva sandhi (u-sandhi)
Utva sandhi occurs when a word ending in the vowel u is followed by a vowel. The final u of the first word drops and the following vowel joins the preceding consonant: ramudu + atadu = ramudatadu.
Definition
Utva sandhi is one of the Telugu sandhis. "Utvam" means the vowel u. Many Telugu words end in u (ramudu, atadu, nivu and so on). When the first word ends in u and the second begins with a vowel, that u drops and the initial vowel of the second word joins the consonant before it.
Rule and examples
The rule, in textbook form: when a vowel follows u, sandhi takes place. Most books call it nityam, that is, obligatory (subject to verification).
Examples:
ramudu + atadu = ramudatadu
atadu + evadu = atadevadu
nivu + evaru = nivevaru
